Mamma Mia

As a result of an argument, I kept thinking about my origin.  Why do Muslims disregarding the ideal of ‘Islamic Brotherhood’, prefer to stick to their people by language, faith or religion?  Where do I belong?

I used to think that lucky are those who are born in Punjabi, Pathan, Baloch, Sindhi, Gujrati or Memon families.  Whatever the place they are born, they are recognized by their language and are automatically connected to their linguistic community around the world.  No matter where they live, they support each other.

I felt the same for those who are born in families of particular faith.  Shia, Bohri, Agha Khani, Ismaeeli, Qadyani, Tableeghi, Wahabi, Ahl-e-Sunnah, Hanafi, Shafai — their particular beliefs stick them together.

I saw people of Karachi dividing themselves by the places their ancestors used to live.  Delhi, Luknow, Amroha, Rampur, Baraili, Utter Perdaish, Kanpur, Kalyana, Bihar.  The unrest of pre-partition history migrated along with them.

In last couple of years, I have heard of many Christian families planning to move out to places where they can live in peace.  Most probably in a Christian society under these circumstances.  Same goes for the other communities by religion.

I recalled the sayings of our elders “apna phir chaon main marta hay” and I am sure same must have been said in other languages too.  The words on the first hearing, reveal the fear of humiliation, injustice and discrimination from other people.  But in fact, show no sign of security, support, respect, protection for the group members too.  Then what’s the point of being loyal to, to back up each other in corruption, be ready to become a false witness, to seal the lips or repeat others…????

This is the fear that Islam removed by setting universal principals for mankind; justice, equality, kindness, sympathy, aid and assistance, sincerity.  Islam denounces all affiliations that are superior to these basic principals.

So believing in the words of Qur’an and the Prophet (peace be upon him), to find peace and security in His divine guidance, I decided to set my origin on two things.  The place I am born at and the faith I am born in.  My Prophet (pbuh) told “Religion is sincerity.  To Allah and His Book, and His Messenger and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folks.” The founder of my country said, “Our object should be peace within, and peace without. We want to live peacefully and maintain cordial friendly relations with our immediate neighbours and with the world at large.”
