Educational Emergency in Pakistan

Whatever it means, we’ve got to do something about it.  By the way, when, in the history we had not been into educational crisis.  We only declared it now.

I have few questions in my mind…

1- What made us realize that we are facing a nation-wide educational emergency – general moral decline, increasing street crimes, extremism in behaviour, rising family issues, obscenity,  students’ inability to read/write/understand/solve problem or something else? 

We usually use the word ‘education’ as a solution to all problems.  If I say yes to all these elements, then obviously education alone can’t serve as an antidote.  Education is a process of academic activities that spreads over many years.  It doesn’t work like a magic wand.  People can’t be excused for their moral misbehaviour just because they have never been to school.  Street crimes aren’t only the result of economic crisis but a youth adventure and  part of political games too.  Family issues rise because of injustice and conspiracies.  Extremism and obscenity are the matters of self control.

It is actually “students’ inability to read/write/understand/solve problems” which has proved parents, school administrations and the ministry of education a big failure.  Parents actually are the key investors, they should set a guideline for themselves, use their rights to interfere in schooling system, pressurize the ministry of education to take right steps for quality education.  Parents should learn how to deal with children, how to motivate them towards learning, how to discipline them, how to evaluate their intellectual skills, etc.

Remember, a society consists of families, which are led by parents.  Good parents means good society.

2- Who declared this emergency or is it a divine declaration?

This emergency must have been declared by very concerned patriots of Pakistan.  Otherwise, parents only care about their own children, rest go to Hell.  Ministry of Education is aimless and incompetent.  School administrations are mostly run by or are influenced with political parties – and we know the fact that political parties would never support a ‘strong Pakistan based educational system in Pakistan”.  English medium schools of Karachi and Sindh and many colleges are good example of it.

3- Which people exactly have responded worriedly about this emergency – parents, higher level students, teachers, school administrations, ministry of education, government, illiterate majority or literate minority?

I think that parents, teachers, school administrations, ministry of education, government and illiterate majority are worried about this emergency.  They have been playing a very set monetary game so far, they wouldn’t want to see things improving.  Higher level students are more worried about the utilization of their degrees, how to gain what they have spent on education.

4- Which elements have caused this disastrous situation – over population, imported curriculum, non-qualified teachers, inefficient school administrations, parents’ illiteracy, television programs, overall negligence of our society?

If everyone, which means each one of us, agree upon all of them – what would then each one of us do something about them?  Teachers school staff come from common houses.  Parents can’t control television channels but can control the television set in their home.  Parents, women especially, can sacrifice two hours stupid morning shows and use that time to improve their literacy and ILLITERACY even after achieving a degree or diploma.

5-  What state of educational crisis are we in? 

a)  The students in schools and colleges are unable to read and write independently – an essay, an application, an article, an incident, an event, a story, even a paragraph.  They have no habit of using a dictionary or a thesaurus.  They are unable to do even simple mathematical calculations.

b)  About 7 million children in Pakistan do not go to school.

This simply means that the tinee tiny official funds for education and parents’ money that they spend on their children’s education, all have been wasted – by whom? – by parents, school administrations and ministry of education.

There is no planning for non-attendees to learn to read and write.

What is education?

Dictionaries say: Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.  It is the act of imparting or acquiring skills as for a profession.  It is a kind of schooling.

“Education in its broadest, general sense is the means through which the aims and habits of a group of people lives on from one generation to the next.”  Jhon Dewey in Democracy and Education

Pakistan is a gender-based, family-oriented, feudal-minded society.  Gender-based in a sense that different standards are set for boys and girls.  Family-oriented because children are not allowed to violate family tradition and decisions taken by elders no matter how stupid they sound.  Feudal-minded – showing the attitude of ‘might is right’ so people, instead of focusing on rights, consume their efforts in gaining authority.

In Pakistan, the general concept of education is limited to financial gains and loss; a degree or diploma or any state which can enable to earn livelihood.  They find it totally useless if degree fails in getting them a job of standard they have set.  The majority of Pakistan want to spend not a single paisa and no time on education, all they want it for free.

Education in Pakistan has no value for elite and show-biz people, they have no reason to think about it.  Most educated lot, thinkers and NGOs are influenced with western style of education – they are obsessed with English –  their children speaking English and that’s it – what are they learning in English and its effect, they don’t care about it – Pakistan is none of their concern.

WHAT SOULD BE DONE IN THIS SITUATION?

1- This is very unfortunate that there are all kind of television channels running in Pakistan but an educational one except Virtual University which is for higher level students.

In America, PBS is dedicated to children’s program, teaching them letters, vowels, words, rhyming, syllables, sentence formation, politeness, communication skills, friendship, kindness to animals, caring animals and plants, etc.

2- While introducing imported curriculum in Pakistan, we totally ignore the fact that those high standard curriculum are not ‘high standard’ for where they are taken from.  Those are English countries.  Their children are born in an English speaking environment so they make their curriculum not to introduce a second language to their children but to learn skills in their own language.  When their teachers say ‘what is this?’, their children know what she is saying.

For our students, English is a second language.  Our children don’t even watch English cartoons or movies in English but Hindi.  So they don’t get to hear what they are forced to excel in at the age of 4 or 5.  This is not the matter of English or Urdu, very wickedly, Pakistani children are attracted to adopt Hindi through commercials, cartoons and movies.

3- Schools and colleges should be free of political influence.

4- Montessori syllabus and the categorization of subjects in 9th and 10th grade are both perilous.

Montessori syllabus in Pakistan is a violation of its own objectives and a great burden on little minds, which results in losing interest in learning anything by the age of 10.

This weird classification of subjects restricts growing minds from thinking extensively.  Science, Arts, Home-Economics, Computers – all divided in main groups – this is non-sense.

5- For those have no chance of going to school need to be placed where they can spend at least half day to learn unlike schooled children.

 

Steve Jobs and Pakistan

A human being benefited the world alike.  Hmmmm! Isn’t it a believer’s quality?

Yes, a believer’s quality, that once was a Muslims’ characteristic too, one after another, in almost all fields of life that can make one’s life meaningful, mostly were Arabs, then Africans joined them in faith and in mission and then Muslims from other nations followed the pattern.  I am not talking about the Kings who build the monuments as memorial.

My concern are those who changed the world.  Those who caused the ding in the universe.  This is what exactly Steve wanted to do as he said, “I want to put a ding in the universe”.  Those who showed light to Europeans in their Dark-Ages to be the part of civilized and strong nations.  Those who initiated the ideas for scientific developments and paved the path for technological advancement – introductory ideas that opened the doors for discoveries and inventions.  Those who only thought and uttered but convinced others to follow and succeed.

How true was Steve in his words, “innovation distinguishes between the leader and the follower”.  This is a universal rule same for all.  Muslims innovated, Muslims led.  But that was until we believed in universal brotherhood and equality.

We fell into Dark-Ages since we started translating “innovation” as “bid’ah”.  Doubting each and every step toward betterment as a sinful/wasteful worldly affair, every new idea as “innovation in Shari’ah (Islamic code of law)” and every source of knowledge as a hurdle in worshiping and weakness of faith.

Even at this time of reawakening, how we are wasting our elementary level geniuses – teaching them something that is only a reference now – Abacus the counting tool from B.C. as the first computer, Leibniz and Pascal and devices from 17th and 18th centuries??????????? ———————- instead of teaching them how to work online and use dictionary, find synonyms and antonyms, learn pronunciation, teaching letter and application writing on e-mail, graphics, watching Sal Khan’s videos ………….all that when they are able to do that.

While searching for his life achievements, I liked his website www.allaboutstevejobs.com and the way the world paid tribute to him.  And the most I really enjoyed his quotes.  (I really enjoy them because on our side, we just stir the air with political blame game.

Poor, Pathetic People of Pakistan… don’t realize their own power… have divided themselves in sects and categories…. exploited by employers, used by maulvis, abused by politicians, looted by school-owners, mis-entertained by celebrities and then ignored by all of them.  They make money and power from people, build their own well and start securing and defending the dwellers of their wells, convince people that they all are sincere with them and then finally leave them alone in hard times.  They all protect each other against people.

Common people should get united and reject the current members and representatives of all the above mentioned fields.  Find some true patriotic individuals who are sincere with them, who can work for their welfare, who don’t treat them like a jerk, who listen to them and value their opinion, who understand the importance of cultural and religious limits, who can stand with them side by side and work for their betterment.

عوام کہتےکس کو ہیں۔۔۔ وہ لوگ جو خود کو عوام کہتے یا سمجھتے ہیں انھوں نے کبھی سوچا ہے کہ وہ ہیں کیا۔۔۔ بلا, مصیبت, طاقت, غلام, جانور۔۔۔

سیاستدان عوام سے ووٹ لے کر عیش کرتے ہیں دور بستیاں بسا کر عوام کو جھک کردیکھتے ہیں۔۔۔ اور ان ووٹوں کے بدلے جھوٹے وعدے, بھوک مفلسی بد حالی۔۔۔ یہاں تک کہ الو کے پٹھےجیسی گالیاں اور الزامات کہ ہماری عوام ہے ہی ایسی بے حس, جاہل,کاہل۔۔۔ دوسرے ملکوں کی مثالیںدیتے ہیں ہم پراعتماد نہیں۔۔۔  حالانکہ ووٹ لیتے وقت اسی عوام سے کہتے ہیں کہ صرف وہی ان کے نجات دلانے والے ہیں۔۔۔ ووٹ ہوتا کیاہے ٹرسٹ بھروسہ اعتماد۔۔۔

فنونی لطیفے یعنی اداکار, گلوکار, پروڈیوسرز, ہدایتکار, مصور, شاعر وغیرہ عوام کے جیب سے اپنے فن کی قیمت نکلواکرلکھہ پتی کروڑ پتی بن جاتے ہیں۔۔۔ دور بستیاں بسا کر عوام کو جھک کردیکھتے ہیں۔۔۔ جب تک جیب بھری جارہی ہے عوام اچھے۔۔۔ ورنہ الزامات۔۔۔ عوام میں شعورنہیں فن کو نہیں سراہتے بدذوق ہیں۔۔۔  دوسرے ملکوں  کےفنکاروں کودیکھتے ہیں ہمارے فن کی قدر نہیں۔۔۔ اور جو فنونی لطیفے شکایت کرتے ہیں کہ ان کی قدر نہیں کی گئی۔۔۔ انیس وپینسٹھہ اور انیس واکہتر۔۔۔ یہ دو جنگ کے سال تھے۔۔۔ بیالس فلمیں ریلیز ہوئیں انیس وپینسٹھہ میں جس میں سے آدھی سے زیادہ کامیاب۔۔۔ چھہ سات فلمیں انیس واکہترمیں ریلیز ہوئیں سب کامیاب۔۔۔ لوگوں نے جنگوں کے دوران انہیں کامیاب کیا اور کتنی قدر کریں۔۔۔ انھوں نے پلٹ کر کیا کیا۔۔۔ بنگلے گاڑیاں عیش۔۔۔ اکیلے جئے ڈپریشن میں مرگئے۔۔۔ باہر والوں کی نقل۔۔۔ جس پڑھے لکھے فنکار سے پوچھیں کہ آپکے پسندیدہ اداکار, گلوکار, مصنف, شاعر۔۔۔ باہر والوں کا نام لے دیں گے۔۔۔ ان کو تو آپس میں ایکدوسرے کے فن پر اعتماد نہیں۔۔۔ عوام سے چاہتے ہیں انھیں پسند کریں۔۔۔ ایک میڈم نورجہاں تھیں جو سچے پاکستانی کی طرح جی گئیں شاید اسلئے کہ اسکول نہیں پڑھیں انگلش نہیں جانتی تھیں۔۔۔اور اسی لئی جب آجکل کے پڑھے لکھے اپنے فن میں گرنے لگتے ہیں تو میڈم کا ری مکس گا کرالبم ہٹ کرالیتے ہیں۔۔۔ مرکر بھی کتنوں کی آمدنی کاسبب بن جاتی ہیں۔۔۔انھوں نے پاکستانیت سے دل جیتے۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔ ایک آجکل کے انگریز اور انڈیا کے پودے۔۔۔ زبان پر شاید ادب تمیز آگیا لیکن دل پاکستانی تہذیب سے خالی۔۔۔۔

کاروباری افراداپنی مصنوعات بیچ کرکروڑ پتی بن جاتے ہیں۔۔۔ دور بستیاں بسا کر عوام کو جھک کردیکھتے ہیں۔۔۔ عوام خریدار اورعوام ہی انکے ملازم۔۔۔ کوئی لیبر قوانین نہیں۔۔۔ الزامات الگ۔۔۔ محنتی نہیں ہوتے۔۔۔ ایماندار نہیں ہوتے۔۔۔ وفادارنہیں ہوتے۔۔۔ دوسرے ملکوں کی چیزیں خریدتے ہیں۔۔۔ اپنے ملک سے محبت نہیں۔۔۔ میری پیدائش سے پہلے کا واقعہ ہے۔۔۔ بابا لیبر یونین میں تھے بڑھ بڑھ  کے تقریریں کرتےمزدوروں کے حق میں بولتے۔۔۔  مالک کے بیٹے نے بد تمیزی کی بابا نے رکھہ کے منہ پہ دیا۔۔۔ نتیجہ۔۔۔ جیل گئے اور دھمکی ملی کہ معافی نہ مانگی تو قتل کے مقدمے میں پھنسا کرپھانسی دلوادیں گے۔۔۔ بابا نے تو کیا معافی مانگنی تھی لہذا مقدمہ بنا۔۔۔۔۔۔ گھر کی خواتین نے منتیں مانی وظیفے کئے۔۔۔ کوئی اور آگے نہ آیا کیونکہ سب ہی پھنستے۔۔۔

اسکول مالکان اور پرنسپلز عوام کو اعلی تعلیم کاجھانسہ دے کرلوٹتے ہیں۔۔۔ لکھہ پتی کروڑ پتی بن جاتے ہیں۔۔۔ دور بستیاں بسا کر عوام کو جھک کردیکھتے ہیں۔۔۔ پیسہ آنا رکا اور الزامات شروع۔۔۔ لوگوں کو اچھی تعلیم کی قدر نہیں۔۔۔ پیسہ خرچ نہیں کرتے۔۔۔

دینی علماء,  مولوی,  دینی رہنما الله رسول کے نام پرعطیات کے بہانےعوام کے جیب سے لاکھوں کروڑوں روپے نکلواتے ہیں۔۔۔ مگربستیاں دور نہیں بساتے۔۔۔ اسی لئے منٹوں میں عوام کو کسی کے بھی خلاف کھڑا کردیتے ہیں۔۔۔

عوام کاسب سے بڑا جرم اور ظلم یہ ہے کہ ان سیاستدانوں, فنونی لطیفوں, ساہوکاروں اور تعلیم کے رکھوالوں اور دینی لوگوں کی محبت میں, ان سب کی باتوں اور وعدوں پر اعتبار کرکے اپنی جیبیں خالی کردیتے ہیں۔۔۔ اور مزید کمانے کے لئے دن رات ایک کردیتے ہیں کہ ان کو وقت ہی نہیں ملتا کہ پوچھیں ان سب ظالموں نے کیا اندھیر مچا رکھی ہے۔۔۔ ان کے پیچھے اپنے جیسے عام لوگوں کا حق مارتے ہیں۔۔۔ دھوکا دیتے ہیں لوٹتے ہیں۔۔۔

اگر عوام آپس میں ایک ہوں اور ایک ہاتھہ میں جوتا اور دوسرا ہاتھہ ان سب کے گریبانوں پر تو یہ کبھی اندھیر نہ مچائیں۔۔۔ اپنی اپنی کمیونٹیزکے کنوؤں میں بیٹھہ کر اپنے حلقوں کا دفاع کرتے ہیں۔۔۔ پاکستان کے لئے عوام اکیلی جان دے۔۔۔۔

State of failures or a Failure state

“Meray aziz hum-watno”… hehehe, main nay socha Kiyana Sahib to aa nahi rahay, main hi shuroo ho jaoon.

Pakistan is not a failure state.  Pakistan is a state of failures.  The reason is the lack of coordination between the people and the government.

Sometimes people think of patriots as a hurdle in the progress of their country.  They are the one who usually condition their personal progress with the country.  If they get appreciations, the system is good otherwise they blame others for their failure.  Unfortunately, the moment they get good opportunities, the first thing they think of is to run abroad and never come back.  Pakistan gave birth to many such remarkable and extra-ordinary people but are they in Pakistan?  Those students who made world record in O’ Levels or as it really means the ordinary level and the one who got positions in software or engineering or medicine or science or any other field.  So for me, they are all very sincere to others but are selfish to their own people and that is why I rank them as aliens, using Pakistani soil and resources to propagate others.  They need to understand that ‘moving fast breaking all the limits’ is not called progress even in the advance countries.  These are the people who, despite of being blessed with all kind of facilities, fail to work for their nation in a direct or indirect way.

Patriots are those who believe in the “get along and work along” policy.  They set their boundaries of halal and haraam and right and wrong and they step forward very carefully.  Before deciding for their own life, they think about a lot of people, the one who have played a big role in their upbringing…. to keep the balance between the two ways of serving their nation.

ہمارے ہاں ملک وقوم کا تصور صرف گھر اور برادری کی حد ہے۔۔۔ کسی بھی صوبے یا شھر کے لوگوں کودیکھہ لیں۔۔۔ عام حالات میںوہ اپنی ذات گھر اور برادری سے زیادہ وفادار ہوتے ہیں۔۔۔ اور ان وفاداریوں کو نبھانے کے چکر میں جو بھی فیصلے کرتے ہیں وہ کچھہ عرصے بعد پورے ملک وقوم کے مسا ئل میں اضافے کاسبب بنتے ہیں۔۔۔

پچھلے چند دنوں میں کافی ساری شادی اور بچوں کی خبریں سنیں۔۔۔ کسی نے ایک ہی وقت میں دو شادیاں کیں۔۔۔ کسی نے سات شادیوں پر اڑتالیس بچے پیدا کرلئے۔۔۔ کسی کو ورلڈ ریکارڈ قائم کرنے کے لئے مزید شادیوں کی اجازت چاہیے۔۔۔ اکثر شادیاں گھر یا خاندان کے بڑوں کے فیصلوں  کا نتیجہ ہوتی ہیں۔۔۔ حالانکہ وہ بڑے کبھی خود بھی جوان رہے ہوتے ہیں اور بہت کچھہ سہہ چکے ہوتے ہیں۔۔۔ لیکن اپنے تجربات سے کچھہ نہیں سیکھتے اور نہ ہی اپنے رسم ورواج میں کسی تبدیلی کے خواہشمند ہوتے ہیں۔۔۔ بڑوں کے فیصلوں کے آگے سر جھکانے والوں کو فرماں بردار اور جنت کا حقدار سمجھا جاتا ہے۔۔۔ اورجو ذراانکے خلا ف چلے اسکو نافرمان اور باغی مشہور کیا جاتا ہے۔۔۔ ایسے موقعوں پرمولوی حضرات قرآن وحدیث کے مطابق اس کے جہنمی ہونے کا فتوی صادر کر دیتے ہیں۔۔۔ ویسے بھی دینی لوگوں کا اسلام نماز روزے حج اور زکوہ کے مسائل کے بعد مرد عورت شادی بچے اور طلاق مصائب سے آگے نہیں بڑھ پاتا۔۔۔ یاتومصائب بیان کرکے خوش ہو تے ہیں یا مسائل۔۔۔

ویسے توخیر میرے دادا نے بھی آٹھہ شادیاں کی تھیں۔۔۔ یا تو انکی بیویاں مر جاتی تھیں یا بچے۔۔۔ بابا کو اسی بات کے طعنے پڑتے تھے کہ کیسا مرد ہے ایک ہی شادی کرکے بیٹھا ہے۔۔۔ اکلوتا ہونے کی یہ بھی ایک پرابلم ہوتی ہے کہ سب کی خواہشات کا بوجھہ اسے اٹھانا پڑتا ہے۔۔۔

خیر۔۔۔ بات یہ ہے کہ اس گھروں گلی محلوں میں بکھرے  ہوئے لوگوں کو ایک قومیت اور انسانیت کا تصور دینا۔۔۔ اور ان دونوں کاآپس میں ربط سمجھانا اصل کرنے کا کام ہے۔۔۔ یہ کرنا تو چاہیے تھا نظام تعلیم سے تعلق رکھنے والوں کو۔۔۔ لیکن وہ ہو گئے فیل۔۔۔ وزیرتعلیم, اساتذہ, کورس سیلیکٹ کرنے والے, سلیبس بنانے والے۔۔۔
اب اس فیل قوم پر کون محنت کرے گا کہ یہ آگے پاس ہو جائے۔۔۔

سیدھی سی بات ہے ملک و قوم کے کام بھی الله کی عبادت کی طرح دو طریقوں سےکئے جاتے ہیں۔۔۔ ایک براہ راست اور دوسرا ان ڈائریکٹ۔۔۔ دوسرا طریقہ عام اور آسان ہے کہ معاشرے کے ہر فرد کے پاس اتنی سمجھہ اور صلاحیت ہو کہ وہ ہر روپ میں اپنا فرض اداکرے۔۔۔ کیونکہ ظاہر ہے ہر انسان  بیک وقت کئی مختلف کردار مختلف جگہوں پر ادا کر تا ہے۔۔۔ مذہبی اور اخلاقی حدود کونظر میں رکھہ کراپنے ہی کرداروں میں توازن قائم کرنا اس کی اصل آزمائش ہوتی ہے۔۔۔ جس ملک کے لوگوں کی اکثریت اس میں کامیاب ہو جائے وہ لوگ ایک اچھی اور کامیاب قوم بن جاتے ہیں۔۔۔ ورنہ ایک سرزمین ہو نے کے باوجود خود ہی اپنے آپ کو ملک بدر کرتے اوربھٹکتے پھرتے ہیں۔۔۔
براہ راست طریقہ یہ ہوتاہے کہ اپنی قومی شناخت کوزندہ رکھا جائے۔۔۔ قومی پرچم, قومی ترانے, قومی زبان اور قوم کے ہیروز کا احترام کیا جائے۔۔۔ قومی دنوں کو کسی مقصد کے ساتھہ منایا جائے۔۔۔ ان دنوں کا نماز روزے حج زکوہ کی طرحخاص اوقات ہوتے ہیں مگر ادائیگی نہایت ضروری ہوتی ہے۔۔۔فرائض کی طرح۔۔۔

جہاں کی اکثریت ان دونوں طریقوں میں ناکام ہو جائے وہاں ذمہ داریوں کا بوجھہ ان پر جاپڑتا ہے جنکو ان باتوں کا شعور اور احساس ہو۔۔۔

“Allah Ta’aala hum sub ka Hami-o-Nasir ho”…… laikin us say phelay Mr. Himayat aur Miss Nusrat ko apnay darmiyan dhoondhna paray ga”.
