Was Prophet (pbuh) a failure?

Thirteen years of revolutionary period of Makkah under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) (13 to 1 B.H i.e.before Hijrah or 610-622 A.D)……. 10 years of first Islamic state by Prophet Muhammad (bpuh) under the divine guidance (1-10 A.H./622-632 A.D)……. and the thirty years of true Islamic caliphate by the four distinguished companions (10-40 A.H/ 632-661 A.D), which ended with the martyrdom of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)…. The total time period is summed up to forty years (fifty three years including 13 years of Makkan period).
These forty or let’s say fifty three years of early Islamic regime are cited by historians, Muslims and non-Muslims, as the most distinguished and the most brighten part of the many-millennium old human history. Not in terms of forming and establishing a dynamic political government in such a short period but it’s extension to next thirty years is an ideal for any nation. One unified government where peace and justice was guaranteed to common people without any distinction of elite and lower-classes. Everyone was treated equally and had equal opportunity for progress.
However, some people may have a doubt that if that era was so incomparable and superlative in every aspect, why didn’t it last forever, why the system failed to the extent that it produced a massacre like Karbala in next twenty years? Others blame the companions for being formidable and causing downfall.
To find a cure for these doubts, I referred to Qura’n and found this precious verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (256-257 right after Ayatul-Kursi), “Let there be no compulsion in religion; Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks, and Allah hears and knows all things…Allah is the Protector of those who have faith; from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject faith, the patrons are the evil ones; from light, they will be led forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (Forever).”
Everything that Allah has created glorifies Him and obeys Him as according to their written destiny. Only human beings and Genies are given freedom to live according to their choices. No compulsion for them. God will judge them on the basis of how or what kind of life they chose to live.
These two species have an instinct of living free of any control, want to do whatever they want. This lust of freedom leads them to carelessness, selfishness, corruption, injustice, exploitation and wars. That finally divides people into two categories; the oppressed and the oppressors.
God sent His apostles to save nations from the evils of this division, with a clear guideline that could help in reconciling matters in better and peaceful ways. Each prophet was a role-model for their fellow-men. Nations were given opportunity to follow their best men but unfortunately, they rejected them. They followed the course of history in the same manner, i.e. first to live their own way, create a hell out of their worldly desires, wait for a messiah for correction, experience peace and justice for a little while, get sick and tired of pure and simple guideline, deny it and walk back to the previous track to create a hell even worse.
None of the prophets including our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) promised that they are there to impose the laws, to force people to follow their path. No matter how simple and the best the system was, they never claimed it to be long lasting. Their purpose was to set an example if people want to succeed.
Those forty or fifty three years of early Islamic history was the final guideline for the people of the world, if they want to adopt it as their life-style without any compulsion. The system wasn’t a failure one. It was the people who failed to grasp the idea and proved themselves for not being worthy of leading it. They repeated the history in the best way to suffer the worst of the consequences. The system is promised to bring peace and prosperity. Otherwise, as Qur’an says, “Let there be no compulsion in religion; Truth stands out clear from Error”.
