Pakistan, Grow and Glow

The saddest thing that I feel about myself being a Karachiite is that I am misunderstood by the majority of people belong to other provinces.  Why do they think of us as “the enemies of Islam, the American and Indian agents who are involved in the killing of civilians in Northern Areas plus support American drone/missile attacks”?  Why do they count each and every Karachiite as a worker of MQM?

There could be two reasons for this perception.

First, people of Karachi don’t have a frequent and easy access to Northern Areas and Balochistan.  Once in a while they visit those places for a summer or winter trip.  That provides local residents a good business if they understand.  But their leaders have closed the doors for Karachiites.  The only voice that reaches them from Karachi is of Altaf Hussain and that is like a political diary, reminding nation the killing of their workers.

Or whatever they hear from their family members living in Karachi.  Most of them compare the life in Karachi with their rocky lands.  They complain about their miseries and the hard work they do but they never try to change their lives, don’t want to learn, don’t acquire education.  So the choices they are left with to run a road-side hotel, be a security guard or a driver, to sell fruits and dry fruits, to carry cement bags and bricks on their backs, to dig the roads or to sell smuggled fabric.  They should be thankful to Karachiites that they still get business from them.  Just last week  I met a young rickshaw driver and he told me that while attempting the exams for Ninth Grade, he didn’t even know  how to get to the center and what to write in subject.  He seemed proud that he passed the matric but kind of complaining that he is driving rickshaw.

Second, they believe in their racist leaders.  They live in Karachi but never realize that they have more freedom and more opportunities than Urdu speaking people.  Thousands of Pathans and Balochis come here, live here, earn their livelihood and make money to support their families back in their provinces.  What’s with seizing the lands and properties in Karachi?  Why the wrong way?  They have lost their homes, their properties, their lands to Afghanis and Indian agents.  May be this is how they feel the pain, when others come and take away your belonging, kill you and cause you to leave your birthplaces.

The truth is that that people of Pakistan believe more in what politicians say.  They let politicians drive them crazy.  Balochis, Punjabis, Pathans, Sindhis and Urdu speaking…they all need each other.  They can be good friends of each other, not Americans or Indians or Afghanis.  God knows, they won’t helps us, never.  They want to turn Pakistan into Iraq or Kashmir or Palestine.  Why provide them with reasons?  They are using politicians and many religious groups to divide us, to create hatred and fear.  We don’t need to fear each other.  We know our leaders are corrupt, then why do we listen to them?

Not all Karachiites are MQM.  They don’t want to lose their businesses and industries to Indians.  They don’t hate Pathans, Balochis, Punjabis and Sindhis.  They are hard working people as well.  They want to work together.  They are also against American drone and missile attacks.

Let’s not take away life from each other, or the land or the property.  We all have lost a lot.  Let’s reduce the fear and give each other a chance to grow and glow.

Wake Up People…

Men and Women

“The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.”….(Surah At-Tawbah/The Repentance, 71)

“And do not covet that by which Allah has made some of you excel others; men shall have the benefit of what they earn and women shall have the benefit of what they earn; and ask Allah of His grace; surely Allah knows all things.”….. (Surah An-Nisa/The Women, 32)

“Surely the men who submit and the women who submit, and the believing men and the believing women, and the obeying men and the obeying women, and the truthful men and the truthful women, and the patient men and the patient women and the humble men and the humble women, and the alms-giving men and the alms-giving women, and the fasting men and the fasting women, and the men who guard their private parts and the women who guard, and the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember– Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a mighty reward.”….  (Surah Al-Ahzaab/The Clans, 35)

“Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has Faith, verily, to him/her will We give a new Life, a life that is good and pure and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions.”… (Surah An-Nahl/The Bee, 97)

I wondered why the profiles of Pakistani men mostly say interested in “women”, almost the same case with women, they are interested in “men, chatting, dating”.  Why it can’t be something else or may be other choices are not given there.  Why do we like chatting for fun, why not for a mission?  Why do Pakistani men and women, boys and girls, like to use each other, like to play with each others’ dignity and honour?  Why can’t we become the support for each other, in a respective and dignified manner?  Why not behave and become a model for the world?

Well, wasting life with these priorities, even a fool can easily predict our more miserable and disastrous future.  We, both men and women, are responsible for our own destruction.

I seek refuge in the perfect word of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

The order of this land

Many great Muslims scholars tried to prove the existence of God and His Oneness through the systematic coordination and interdependence of the living and non-living things upon each other.

But sometimes things going or happening the opposite of that universal line of discipline also lead to believe that there is a God and He has full command over everything and everyone, either running in order or out of order.

Years ago, I heard of a foreigner who came to this land with the purpose of some technological aid or industrial development and after spending few years in Pakistan, on his return he said that the one who don’t believe in the existence of God should go to Pakistan and see who is running the country.

If only the people of Pakistan can understand this; not only the making of Pakistan but her existence, despite of all the malicious international and regional conspiracies, is a great proof of divinity.

Blessed be the sacred land
Happy be the bounteous realm
Symbol of high resolve
Land of Pakistan!
Blessed be thou, citadel of faith
The order of this sacred land
Is the might of the brotherhood of the people
May the nation, the country, and the state
Shine in glory everlasting!
Blessed be the goal of our ambition
This flag of the crescent and star
Leads the way to progress and perfection
Interpreter of our past, glory of our present
Knowledge of the future
Symbol of the Almighty’s protection

An Angel in Pakistan

“There is a community among the People of the Book who are upright. They recite God’s signs throughout the night, and they prostrate. They believe in God and the Last Day, and enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and compete in doing good. They are among the righteous. You will not be denied the reward for any good thing you do. God knows those who guard against evil…. (Qur’an, Surah Al-e-Imran/The Family of Imran 113-115)

Dr. Ruth Pfau

A great human being that very Pakistani should be proud of, proved with her character and passion that basically all religions are based upon love and humanity.

It was in early seventies when one of my uncle (my mom’s brother-in-law) who was appointed as an agriculture officer in Khairpur, Sindh was bit by some poisonous insect.  Within couple of weeks he started losing his sight along with developing severe skin problem.  At that time, Dr. Pfau was referred to him as the best skin curer .  He then moved to Karachi for regular treatment.  Every time he returned from her clinic, he glorified her politeness and kindness towards her patients, the way she handled them with a soft smile on her face and patted those who were abandoned by their own family members and relatives.  We all became big fan of her in our childhood not knowing who she really was.  We only knew her as a nice Christian foreigner.  Another admirer of Dr. Pfau’s great personality is one my cousin’s husband who got the honour of working with her.  After his matriculation, he moved to Karachi and worked with her while studying medicine.

Dr. Pfau was a nun, a reverent religious personality who dedicated her life to the people not of her faith and race, in a country situated miles away from her birth place.  She is a blessing for the people of Pakistan, a role-model for doctors, for women, for religious people and in general to us all.  May Allah (SWT) be pleased with her always.  Ameen!

“Those who believe and those who are Jews and the Sabaeans and the Christians, all who believe in God and the Last Day and act rightly will feel no fear and will know no sorrow….(Qur’an, Surah Al-Maidah/The Table Spread 69)
