An Angel in Pakistan

“There is a community among the People of the Book who are upright. They recite God’s signs throughout the night, and they prostrate. They believe in God and the Last Day, and enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and compete in doing good. They are among the righteous. You will not be denied the reward for any good thing you do. God knows those who guard against evil…. (Qur’an, Surah Al-e-Imran/The Family of Imran 113-115)

Dr. Ruth Pfau

A great human being that very Pakistani should be proud of, proved with her character and passion that basically all religions are based upon love and humanity.

It was in early seventies when one of my uncle (my mom’s brother-in-law) who was appointed as an agriculture officer in Khairpur, Sindh was bit by some poisonous insect.  Within couple of weeks he started losing his sight along with developing severe skin problem.  At that time, Dr. Pfau was referred to him as the best skin curer .  He then moved to Karachi for regular treatment.  Every time he returned from her clinic, he glorified her politeness and kindness towards her patients, the way she handled them with a soft smile on her face and patted those who were abandoned by their own family members and relatives.  We all became big fan of her in our childhood not knowing who she really was.  We only knew her as a nice Christian foreigner.  Another admirer of Dr. Pfau’s great personality is one my cousin’s husband who got the honour of working with her.  After his matriculation, he moved to Karachi and worked with her while studying medicine.

Dr. Pfau was a nun, a reverent religious personality who dedicated her life to the people not of her faith and race, in a country situated miles away from her birth place.  She is a blessing for the people of Pakistan, a role-model for doctors, for women, for religious people and in general to us all.  May Allah (SWT) be pleased with her always.  Ameen!

“Those who believe and those who are Jews and the Sabaeans and the Christians, all who believe in God and the Last Day and act rightly will feel no fear and will know no sorrow….(Qur’an, Surah Al-Maidah/The Table Spread 69)
